Year 5
Year 5 Curriculum
In Year 5, children enter upper Key Stage 2, building on their earlier learning and developing greater independence. We encourage them to think carefully, ask thoughtful questions and explain their ideas with confidence, while recognising when they need support.
Children explore more demanding texts, discuss authors’ choices and use evidence to explain their understanding. In writing, they develop their ability to plan, organise and refine ideas for different purposes and audiences. Mathematics provides opportunities to strengthen fluency, tackle problems with several steps and justify their reasoning. Across the wider curriculum, children deepen their subject knowledge, consider different sources of information and use precise vocabulary to communicate what they have learnt.
Our Catholic faith guides this journey. Children explore questions of justice, dignity and responsibility, reflecting on how they can use their gifts to serve others and contribute to a fairer world.

The curriculum documents below outline what children learn in Year 5. They identify the key knowledge, skills and vocabulary taught across subjects and help families talk about and support learning at home.
