British Values

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we help children become thoughtful, responsible citizens who contribute positively to their communities. Our Catholic faith teaches us that every person is made in the image and likeness of God and deserves dignity and respect.
We actively promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values complement our Gospel values, the Catholic Pupil Profile and Catholic Social Teaching.
Democracy
We encourage children to understand that their voices matter and that others have the right to be heard. Children learn to share opinions, listen to different viewpoints and discuss ideas respectfully. They explore how voting, representation and fair decision-making help people contribute to their communities.
The Rule of Law
Children learn why rules and laws exist and how they help protect people’s rights and keep communities safe. We encourage children to understand expectations, take responsibility for their actions and recognise how their choices affect others. Fairness, honesty and accountability underpin this learning.
Individual Liberty
We support children to develop confidence, express their views and make informed choices. Children learn about their rights and freedoms, alongside their responsibility to respect the rights of others. Through our curriculum, including PSHE and online safety, they learn how to make safer choices, recognise pressure and seek support.
Mutual Respect
Our belief in the dignity of every person shapes how we treat one another. We encourage children to listen carefully, show kindness and value each person’s contribution. Children learn that people can disagree respectfully and that bullying, prejudice and discrimination are unacceptable.
Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
As a Catholic school, we help children deepen their own faith while developing understanding and respect for others. Through Religious Education and the wider curriculum, children learn about different religions, beliefs and ways of life, including those of people with no religious faith. We encourage thoughtful questions, challenge stereotypes and help children appreciate the diversity of our community.
Putting Our Values into Practice
British Values are woven through our curriculum, assemblies, prayer and everyday relationships. Alongside Catholic Social Teaching, they help children consider questions of fairness, responsibility and the common good.
We want children to understand these values and put them into practice: listening to others, making thoughtful choices, challenging unkindness and helping everyone feel that they belong.
