Catholic Social Teaching
Catholic Social Teaching at Our Lady’s
Faith that shapes our actions.
Catholic Social Teaching helps us consider how to live the Gospel in our relationships, communities and care for the world. It calls us to recognise each person’s dignity and work for a fairer society.
Children explore these ideas through RE, other subjects and everyday school life, connecting what they believe with the choices they make.
The seven principles we explore
These principles help children think about their responsibilities to people nearby, communities around the world and future generations.
Dignity of the Human Person
We believe every person reflects God’s image and is loved by Him. Our worth does not depend on our abilities, background or circumstances. Everyone deserves respect.
Family and Community
We flourish through caring relationships. Children consider how to support their families, welcome others and contribute to a community where everyone can take part.
Solidarity and the Common Good
Our responsibilities reach beyond our own interests. Children explore how working alongside others and considering everyone’s needs can help build a more just world.
Rights and Responsibilities
Every person has rights that protect their dignity. We also have duties towards one another, including respecting those rights and challenging unfair treatment.
Option for the Poor and Vulnerable
Faith calls us to give particular attention to people facing poverty, hardship or exclusion. Children consider how to offer support and address the causes of injustice.
Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers
Work should support human dignity. Children learn to value people’s contributions and understand the importance of fair pay, safe conditions, rest and respectful treatment.
Stewardship: Care for Our Common Home
Caring for God’s creation means thinking about how we use resources and how our choices affect people and nature. Children explore our responsibility to protect the world for those living now and those who come after us.
Putting faith into action
We encourage children to connect these principles with daily life: noticing when someone is left out, offering help, using resources thoughtfully and speaking up about unfairness. Small choices can express a wider commitment to justice and care.
A question to explore at home
Who might need our help, and what could we do together?
