  • Keeping Children Safe through the Curriculum

At Our Lady’s Catholic Primary School, we want every child to feel safe, valued and listened to. Guided by our Catholic ethos, we teach children to recognise their own worth, respect the dignity of others and develop the confidence to ask for help.

Our curriculum responds to children’s needs and the issues they may encounter as they grow. Through Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), computing and wider curriculum opportunities, children learn about healthy relationships, emotional wellbeing and keeping safe.

    Learning to Keep Safe

Through age-appropriate teaching, children learn to:

    • Recognise potentially unsafe situations and know where to seek help.

    • Identify trusted adults and keep asking for help until their concerns are heard.

    • Understand personal boundaries, privacy and the importance of respecting others.

    • Recognise when someone’s behaviour or pressure makes them feel uncomfortable.

    • Stay safer online, protect personal information and report worrying content or contact.

    • Recognise bullying, including cyberbullying, and understand how to get support.

    • Develop safer habits when walking, cycling, scooting and using roads.

    • Recognise and talk about their feelings, build confidence and care for their mental wellbeing.

    • Look after their physical health through exercise, healthy eating and positive daily routines.

    Reinforcing Important Messages

Teachers use stories, discussion and carefully chosen scenarios to help children explore situations and practise making safe choices. These messages are revisited across subjects, assemblies and everyday school life so that children can connect their learning to real experiences.

Teaching takes account of children’s ages, understanding and individual needs. We encourage children to share worries and remind them that adults are responsible for keeping them safe.

    Visitors, Programmes and Resources

We enrich this learning through specialist visitors, practical activities and trusted educational resources. These include:

    • Our local Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs).

    • Scootability and Bikeability.

    • Road safety education, including Sustrans resources and activities.

    • Online safety resources from CEOP.

    • NSPCC safeguarding resources.

    • Anti-Bullying Week.

    • Mental health awareness activities.

    • Internet safety education and awareness activities.

Together, these opportunities help children develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to recognise concerns, seek support and show care for others.
