    Religious Education at Our Lady’s

Knowing our faith. Living its message.

Religious Education has a central place in our school. Children learn about the Catholic faith and explore what the words and actions of Jesus mean for the way we live.

We encourage children to be curious, ask thoughtful questions and share their ideas. Through studying Scripture, beliefs and religious traditions, they deepen their understanding and learn to listen carefully to others.

Our RE curriculum is Discerning Disciples, developed for primary schools in the Archdiocese of Birmingham and based on the Religious Education Directory, To Know You More Clearly. Learning builds over time as children return to key ideas and develop their religious vocabulary.

    How children learn

Three connected approaches help children build knowledge, think carefully and reflect on their learning.

    Understand

Learning about Scripture, Catholic beliefs, prayer and the sacraments. Children develop their vocabulary and make connections between the ideas they study.

    Discern

Exploring questions, considering different viewpoints and explaining ideas. Children learn to support their thinking with reasons and listen to other perspectives.

    Respond

Reflecting on what they have learnt and considering its meaning. Children explore how beliefs can influence people’s choices and their own understanding of the world.

    Understanding and respecting others

Children also learn about other religions and worldviews. They explore similarities and differences, ask respectful questions and develop an understanding of beliefs beyond their own. We teach children to value every person, including people of all faiths and none.

    RE for every child

Every child’s questions and ideas matter. We maintain high expectations and adapt teaching and support for children with special educational needs and disabilities, helping them take part, develop their understanding and show what they know.
