Writing

Writing- To write a fantasy story

Monday: To describe the features of a dragon

Task: Watch the clip from ‘How to train your dragon.’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5KjTcbQVMs

Then look at the picture and choose a dragon or draw your own. Label your dragon with lots of adjectives (describing words- use the adjectives list to help you) and the different parts of the dragon.

Tuesday: To describe characters and events in a story.

Task: To use your adjectives to write a descriptive paragraph about your dragon.

Look at the example below about the Gronokle dragon:

The Gronckle can be a slow, lazy, and cranky bulldog-like dragon; it has been known to fall asleep mid-flight, waking only when it plunges into the sea or crashes into a mountain. Because of its tremendous weight and small wings, it would seem impossible for them to fly.

Now give your chosen dragon a name and use the adjectives to write a short description like the one above.

Wednesday: To write sentences using these words in context

To use a dictionary to look up meanings of words.

Task: Look up the words from the sheet in a dictionary (paper or online) and write the definitions, then put these words into your own sentences.

Can you find the definitions for these words from Chapter 3 of ‘How to Train your Dragon’ in your dictionary?

Initiation: ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Primeval:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Defiance:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Heir:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Annihilate:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Ominously:

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Now write one sentences containing each of these words, checking that you have understood the meanings. How humorous can you make your sentences?

Thursday: To rewrite a paragraph inserting pronouns to avoid repetition

Task: Look at the pronouns sheet where the different pronouns are highlighted. Then rewrite the paragraph on sheet 2, replacing the underlined words with a pronoun.

Which pronoun?  (Original)

All pronouns highlighted

The next morning, Hiccup checked the dragon under his bed. It was still asleep.

When his mother, Valhallarama, asked him at breakfast, ‘How did Initiation go yesterday, dear?’’, Hiccup said, ‘Oh, it was fine. I caught my dragon.’

‘That’s nice, dear’, Valhallarama replied vaguely.

Stoick the Vast looked up briefly from his bowl and boomed, ‘EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT,’ before getting back to the important task of shovelling food into his mouth.

After breakfast, Hiccup went to sit on the front step beside his grandfather, who was smoking a pipe. It was a beautiful, cold clear winter’s morning, with not a breath of wind and the sea all around as flat as grass.

Old Wrinkly blew out smoke rings contentedly as he watched the sun coming up. Hiccup shivered and chucked stones into the bracken. Neither of them spoke for a long time.

At last Hiccup said, ‘I got that dragon.’

I said you would, didn’t I?’ replied Old Wrinkly, very pleased with himself.

Yellow – personal

Green – possessive (pronouns or determiners)

Blue - relative
